JankoAtWarpSpeed redesigned and a giveaway begins

After almost two years of its existence JankoAtWarpSpeed has been redesigned, this time dramatically. There were several reasons for total redesign among which are usability issues discovered in testing, feedback from readers and aligning the design with the goals for the future.

Update: The giveaway is closed on February 15th 2010, 12:00PM (+1 GMT), winners are announced at the end of the post.

Since I was occupied with many things at the same time, the redesign took much longer then it should, so I am very satisfied (and very happy) it is finally live! I am currently writing an article that will explain reasons and the process of redesign in more details. I will share my analysis results, thoughts, sketches and activities.

Feel free to explore the site. As always, I am looking forward to hearing your feedback!

Giveaway

To celebrate the new design I am giving away some cool stuff here.

1. One Happy Webbies T-shirt

Thanks to Lori from nGenWorks you might win a fantastic T-shirt with one of the most famous interwebbers, such as Jakob Nielsen, Jeffrey Zeldman, Molly Holzschlag and many more (see the image above). The winner will be able to choose the t-shirt and desired size. While you are here you might also want to download some of their awesome wallpapers.

Happywebbies are very professional, t-shirts are of a high quality so if you don't win one, I recommend you visiting their site and buy one for yourself.

2.One "Rocket Surgery Made Easy" Book

I guess that many of you read legendary Don't Make Me Think from Steve Krug. His new book, Rocket Surgery Made Easy goes deeper into the usability testing - how to find and, what is even more important, fix usability problems. The goal of this book is to introduce usability testing to non-usability professionals and guide them on how to organize and perform, what is know as discount usability testing.

If you are not an usability expert, this might be very useful book for you.

3. One Moleskine Sketchbook Pocket

I think that many know what Moleskine is but for those who don't, it is a brand of notebooks, sketchbooks, addressbooks, planners, etc. made by company named Moleskine. They are the choice of many designers and artists who use them to capture ideas, concepts and thoughts. It is a tool that you must have. I am giving away one pocket size sketchbook.

Update: Thanks to Topher from HTML Rockstars you might also win these two great books:

4. Sexy Web Design

Sexy Web Design is a book published by SitePoint. "Sexy Web Design is an easy-to-follow guide that reveals the secrets of how to build your own breathtaking web interfaces from scratch. You’ll be guided through the entire process of creating a gorgeous, usable web site by applying the timeless principles of user-centered design."

5. Simply JavaScript

Simply JavaScript is a book also published by SitePoint. "Packed with examples, Simply JavaScript is all you need to start programming in JavaScript the right way. Learn how easy it is to use JavaScript to solve real-world problems, build smarter forms, track user events (such as mouse clicks and key strokes), and design eye-catching animations. Then move on to more powerful techniques using the DOM and Ajax."

These two also can come as an aplogize, because my blog was down fo a couple of hours.

How to participate

Just leave a comment at the end of this post or tweet about this giveaway. If you leave a comment, feel free to leave your thoughts about the new design. The winners will be announced on Monday, February 15th 12:00PM GMT +1 as the update on this post. To make it more uncertain, the selection of winners AND prizes will be random. Good luck!

Update: Winners announcement

The giveaway is finished, and here is the list of winners.

  1. Happy Webbies t-shirt: Markus Bürgler
  2. Rocket Surgery Made Easy: Ashok (no lastname)
  3. Moleskine Sketchbook Pocket: Chris Maynard
  4. Sexy Web Design: David (no lastname)
  5. Simply JavaScript: @desizntech (via twitter)

[cont..] I don't like however how you removed images to conserve space. I'm a visual person and like to browse by image first and text second. Ten links stacked on each other just makes me tired. Also, the "sponsor buttons" on the right hand side really clash with the site and each other. I think they're more visible now than before (can't remember) and it's not very pretty. It feels like the blog lost a shred of personality. I'll have to sleep on this...

Janko

Janko 10 Feb 2010 #

I completely understand what you say about articles list. I was thinking a lot about the home page and after many different ideas (images, popular posts, grids...) I decided to go with minimalistic design. The ads on the right are the compromise solution, but I will certainly pay attention to that area.

Thanks for the feedback!

Like a lot of people I really like the comments section and treatment on the form fields and buttons. I think there is too much white space and to me it makes the articles blend in too much. I think it needs a border or something to frame it to make the design feel completed. I loved the old site so maybe I'm just biased.

But I miss the post image in post lists (not sure for the excerpt).

Teebo

Teebo 11 Feb 2010 #

The design is "ok"... I'm not going to make friends here by stating this probably.
It's simplistic, which I like.  I really like your sketches but it seems (to me) that you didn't go all the way.
Probably due to a lack of free time.
For example, your "Save comment" button is quite ordinary.
The pencil styled borders seem too "straight" and too think compared to your header pencil strokes.
You have neat penciled arrows for replied comments, but the default avatar is too plain.
And your footer... really needs a lifting.
People are probably going to react and say "who the hell is he"!?
Well... no-one in particular.  I find Janko's approach and criticism on web development to be enlightening and inspirational and have read almost all his posts (without ever commenting though).
But I think this new design, which reflex Janko's on-going integration of sketches in his writings, could be even better.

Janko

Janko 11 Feb 2010 #

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, it is perfectly fine if you disagree with my design decisions. The constructive criticism is always welcome!

The truth is I never have enough time but I didn't left the design unfinished. The level of details on each element is intentional.

Here are some thoughts: I didn't want to go nuts with save button, I really like it to be this simple. I used CSS3 borders for input boxes to minimize the load time (one image of 1kb instead of custom, hand drawn-images for each field). Also, by making them straight I gave the comment form just enough importance. I think that default avatar have enough contrast in comparing to gravatar images - it should be this plain and simple, in my opinion. Not sure what you exactly mean about footer, a bit more details would help Smile

I believe that tagline and content are enough for quick conclusion about the site purpose. It was perfectly clear on usability test, at least.

I hope that I made some of my decisions a bit clearer, but I will make sure I explain them in more details in upcoming post.

Thanks again!

Teebo

Teebo 15 Feb 2010 #

It's nice that you have an answered to each of my point of views.
Your design was built in a thoughtful manor and that is not common to ever web designer.

CSS3 is of course really nice, useful and completely intuitive.  But we're still in a IE web world... more over I work in Paris, France and IE6 in the business world still represents ~45% of browser hits and it's not really CSS3 friendly (even less HTML5).

Last point, the footer.  In my point of view, it seems so much different form the rest of the webpage.  A sketch in relation to the header: a satellite to represent the off-spring of the page maybe?  I especially do not like the association of yellow font with the blue-gray noised background.

That concludes my critic... no harm done I hope.

Keep up your insightful articles.

Janko

Janko 15 Feb 2010 #

I really appreciate your feedback. It is indeed important and I will always take into consideration what others have to say.

I completely understand your point regarding IE6, and the entire design reflects my decision to stop supporting IE6 in any possible way - projects, tutorials, etc. Actually I already dropped the support for IE6 a couple of months ago so there won't be any changes because of this decision.

I will sum up all my thoughts and decisions in the upcoming post so I am looking forward to hear your toughs on it.

Thanks again!

Hi Janko!
Congrats for the redesign!
I like it!

As other user said:
Is very usable,
Very Very Fast,
Nice design (images)
But..
I understand the usability concepts, and how the colors of the site affects them, but i'm still preferring the black background and "strong colors" like green or cool blue.

Particulary, i don't see very well (I use contact lenses) and the dark colors with good contrasts looks very well for me.

I hope that you can appreciate my feedback as a good thing.

(Sorry if i don't wrote very well, my english is not the best =P )

Again, congrats, good job!

Janko

Hey Nicolas, thanks for commenting! I certainly appreciate your feedback and completely understand your points. The thing is that previous design had serious readability issues due to the color scheme and it was one of the first thing that needed to be changed.

I like the sketchy feeling - like its all just been drawn on my screen!

I like the background changes on ordinary links; I use them a lot myself.
For even better experience: a bit more padding around them and some nice CSS3 rounded corners, or even a sketched border somehow would make it even better.

Thanks for all your effect to share your knowledge; one of my own goals for the second half of this year!

I like it. The hand drawn elements blend in really well. Although your Comments section is weird. You are reading at a width of about 620px then as you scroll down boom comment madness. It expands to 800px.

Here is my tweet:  http://twitter.com/IamFreddyG/status/9040864165

Best of luck to your site!

You managed to pick both my favorite color scheme and the hand-drawn theme / textured look... Thumbs up!

Hi Janko

I like your new design with enlight and simple add-on like change color or others with mouse On or Out...

But I think you can put some touch of color or a left logo, something because your ads take my eyes on ...

I like the simplification of the design (am a fan of the minimal style). Keep up the good work! Smile

Hi Janko
Thought I'd come to the wrong site!
Site looks a million dollars... clean and bright with easy navigation.

Spotted this at the bottom of the page "IE 6 isn’t supported at all".
Wow... I'm tempted to go for that on my blog.
Are you trying to start a revolution? LOL

Janko

Janko 15 Feb 2010 #

Well, I'm just sick of supporting it Smile

Hey Janko, your new design is awesome! The right colors, texture and whitespace are all in place.
When will .NET posts return? =)

Janko

Janko 15 Feb 2010 #

Thanks! It is not likely there will be many .net articles in the future (maybe just a few exceptions...)

Very well done Janko! At first the design really reminded me of Snook's design (snook.ca), but after a closer look I guess it was only the background that reminded me.

I really like the new design!!

Janko

Janko 27 Feb 2010 #

Thanks! Yeah, there are some similarities, especially the background, but I drew my inspiration from completely different sources Smile
